Steel storage containers are getting a lot of time in the spotlight for unique “cargotecture” applications like coffee shops and container houses, but the truth is, simple modifications can make a storage container much more functional. Many of Pac-Van’s branch offices can make modifications like adding roll-up doors or a vent, installing overhead lighting or electrical outlets, or even a finished bathroom.
Door and Window Options: We are regularly asked about adding roll-up doors, man-doors or doors on both ends of a storage container to permit easier access to the space and materials that are located within. While cutting out a hole and slapping in a prehung door from the local hardware store may sound like an easy solution, it’s important to understand where and how you can add a door or window without sacrificing structural integrity, so we suggest leaving that to our experts.

Air Circulation Options: Power vents are needed in many cases to prevent the build up of fumes from stored materials. Some customized connex boxes house chemical testing and other on-site processes that may require fresh air to be continually circulated. Many times turbine vents and HVAC units are installed to meet safety requirements.

Electrical and Lighting Options: It’s inconvenient to have to handle a flashlight while you are getting some supplies out of the back corner and light from the double doors at the other end may not let you see very well. Overhead lights and electrical outlets are a good solution, and they definitely expand the overall potential uses for a standard cargo container.

Interior Finish Options: An addition as simple as folding shelves can make your container a much more practical temporary storage space. Finished and insulated walls are another common request to help maintain temperatures for sensitive equipment or occupants. Pac-Van has also installed bathrooms in some of our more custom units. Once you get to the point of adding finished walls or a restroom, you may be more interested in one of our in-stock container offices that include built-in desks and plan tables, but just the addition of a basic restroom can be a money saver for companies that routinely lease port-a-pots for jobsites.

Keep in mind, these are custom modifications for storage containers that are being sold – not short-term lease options that Pac-Van has on hand for immediate delivery. Careful thought and planning go into the decision to purchase a modified shipping container. Give us a call today and one of our experts will help you determine if this is a good option for your business.
