Ever wonder how many different names are used for a steel storage container? One of the most popular terms our customers use is “conex” or “connex box.” One day, a staff member asked, “where did the term connex box come from?” We’ve used the term for years but surprisingly, no one in the room knew the history behind the phrase, so we turned to the internet and here’s what we found thanks to dictionary.com.

Origin: apparently respelling of conex, from con ( tainer for ) ex ( port )

Some of the other names for these containers: sea boxes, shipping containers, storage containers… We’ve heard some great terms that are a little more regional like, “cans,” and we’ve also heard some real doozies from our sister company Royal Wolf in Australia.
