Pac-Van Storage Containers Used in Unique Construction Project

Portable storage containers are used primarily for storing all types of items. They are extensively used at construction sites to keep materials secure and out of the elements and at retailers to store excess merchandise. However, a recent construction innovation employs these containers as structural supports during the building process.

Along a stretch of highway near Salt Lake City is an excellent example of this process where crews are working on the construction of a new bridge.  To minimize impact to traffic flow in the area, the bridge is being built next to its final location and will be moved into place with large cranes once construction is complete. Instead of months of impeded traffic, this technique will only affect the traffic flow for three to five days.

The sections of the bridge are constructed on top of the stacked storage containers that are able to withstand the weight load of the materials used to build the bridge. The rugged construction of the steel storage containers makes them ideal for this type of temporary support.

The lowest level of containers is able to perform double-duty. Since the load-bearing parts of the containers are on the outer corners, the doors are still able to be accessed and provide all of the storage necessary for smaller materials and supplies. In some instances, ground-level container offices can be used as mobile office space that doesn’t take up additional area on the crowded job site.
